The Wizard of Oz is the video slot WMS built around the classic film, and it has been a fixture on American casino floors for years. The demo on this page is the original online version, now published by Light & Wonder. It uses 5 reels and 30 paylines, and you can play it here for free on play-money credits.
The game follows Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion along the yellow brick road. Two things make it stand out. Glinda the Good Witch can float in on any spin and turn whole reels wild, and the Emerald City symbols open the Oz Pick bonus, which leads to a cash prize, free spins or a picking round.

How The Wizard of Oz Works
The reels show 5 columns and 3 rows, with 30 paylines running left to right. A payline is a set path across the reels, and you win when matching symbols line up on one, starting from the first reel. Your total bet is spread over the lines, so the smallest full bet is 0.30 credits.
The picture symbols are characters and items from the film, including Dorothy and Toto. The game logo is the wild, which stands in for regular symbols to complete a line. It does not replace the Feature symbol or the Jackpot symbol. Five Jackpot symbols on an active line pay the top line prize.
The return to player, or RTP, is the share of all bets a slot pays back over a very long time. Sources put this game at 95.96% to 95.99%. Volatility describes how often and how big a slot pays. Reviews rate this one from medium to high, so expect stretches of small wins between the features.
The Wizard of Oz Bonus Features
Glinda the Good Witch
On any base-game spin, Glinda can appear in her pink bubble and turn one or more reels into expanding wild reels before the reels stop. Wild reels replace everything except the Feature and Jackpot symbols, so several at once can fill many lines.
Oz Pick Feature
Land the Emerald City Feature symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 in the same spin. You then pick one of the symbols to reveal your award: an instant cash prize, the Winged Monkey free spins, or the Road to Emerald City round.
Winged Monkey Feature (free spins)
You get 8 free spins. When a Winged Monkey wild lands on reel 3, monkeys fly across the screen and turn other symbols wild for that spin. A retrigger symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 adds 8 more spins.
Road to Emerald City
A picking round. You choose from a field of emeralds, and each one reveals a cash amount, a visit to one of the character lands for an extra prize, or the Emerald City itself, where the largest awards of the round are found.
More Wizard of Oz Versions to Play Free
The other Wizard of Oz games on this page are separate slots with their own rules. Ruby Slippers also has 30 lines, but its random feature turns up to four reels wild and its Emerald City free spins start with 5 spins. Over the Rainbow is a newer 5×4 game with Glinda wild reels, respins, free spins and Balloon Jackpots. Emerald City, Munchkinland, Road to Emerald City, I’ll Get You My Pretty and Follow the Yellow Brick Road each build on a different part of the film.
Good to Know Before You Play
- The bonus needs the Emerald City symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 together. Two out of three pays nothing extra, so near misses are common.
- You do not choose which Oz Pick award you get in the usual sense. You pick a hidden symbol, and the prize behind it is revealed.
- One source notes the Road to Emerald City round is only available when all 30 lines are active, so keep every line switched on.
- Glinda’s wild reels only appear in the base game and arrive at random. There is nothing you can do to trigger them.
