Eye of Horus is an ancient Egypt slot from the German company Merkur, developed with the studio Reel Time Gaming and first released in 2016. It is a common sight on Merkur gaming machines in European arcades and casinos, and the online version plays the same way. Some sites list the same game under the Blueprint Gaming name.

It is a simple game by modern standards: five reels, ten paylines, one wild, and one bonus round. The appeal is in that bonus, where the falcon god Horus upgrades the symbols on the reels step by step. The demo on this page is the original Merkur version.

How Eye of Horus Works

The game has five reels, three rows, and 10 paylines that pay from left to right. Some versions let you play 5 lines instead of 10. You set the stake and, where the option is offered, the number of lines. The reels carry Egyptian picture symbols along with a set of lower-paying symbols, and a win needs matching symbols along a line.

Horus is the wild. When he lands he expands to cover the whole reel and stands in for every symbol except the scatter, so one Horus can complete several lines at once. The temple gate is the scatter. It counts anywhere on the screen, and three, four, or five of them start the free spins. After a win, a gamble option lets you risk the prize to try to double it.

The top RTP setting is 96.31%. RTP, or return to player, is the share of all bets a slot pays back over a very long time. Lower settings of 94.83%, 92.44%, 90.25%, and 88.26% also exist, and the site chooses which one it runs. Reviewers rate the volatility, meaning how often and how big the game pays, from medium to high.

Eye of Horus Bonus Features

Expanding Horus wild

Whenever Horus lands, in the main game or the bonus, he stretches over all three positions on his reel. He substitutes for all symbols except the temple scatter.

Free spins

Three or more temple scatters anywhere award 12 free spins. During the round, every Horus wild that lands adds more spins: one wild adds 1 spin, two add 3, and three add 5.

Symbol upgrades

In free spins each Horus wild also upgrades a symbol tablet. A lower-value symbol is turned into a higher-value one, so the later spins of the round are played with better-paying symbols on the reels.

Gamble

After a win you can choose to gamble it for a chance to double the amount, or lose it. The feature is optional, and you can simply collect the win instead.

More Eye of Horus Versions to Play Free

The page also offers four newer Merkur takes on the game. Eye of Horus Power Spins adds a Power Spins feature and is listed with an RTP between about 94.8% and 96%. Eye of Horus All Stars is listed at 96.03%. Eye of Horus Luxe is a later release in the same collection, and Eye of Horus Bonus Buy adds a paid shortcut into the free spins. They all keep the Egyptian theme of the original.

Good to Know Before You Play

  • Most of the game’s bigger wins come from the free spins, because the symbol upgrades only happen there.
  • The RTP depends on the site. The top setting is 96.31%, but versions as low as 88.26% are in circulation.
  • Published maximum-win figures for this game disagree widely, so we have not listed one in the facts above.
  • Some versions let you choose between 5 and 10 paylines. Playing all 10 gives every possible line a chance to pay.
