Gonzo’s Quest is a NetEnt slot about a Spanish explorer hunting for the lost city of gold. It came out in 2010 and replaced spinning reels with stone blocks that fall into place. That falling-block idea, which NetEnt calls Avalanche, is what the game is known for.

It is an online game and was never a casino floor machine, though many players know it from apps and gaming sites. The demo here is the original 20-line version. Two newer games in the series, Gonzo’s Gold and Gonzo’s Quest 2, can also be opened from this page.

How Gonzo's Quest Works

The screen shows five columns and three rows of carved stone masks, with 20 fixed paylines. You choose a total bet from 0.20 to 50 and every line is covered. A win needs three or more matching masks along a payline. The gold question mark block is the wild and can stand in for any other symbol.

After any win, the winning blocks break apart and the blocks above drop down to fill the gaps. New blocks fall in from the top. If that makes another win, the process repeats. Each avalanche in a row raises the win multiplier shown on the screen, up to a top of 5x in the main game.

The RTP is 95.97%. RTP, or return to player, is the share of all bets a slot pays back over a very long time. Volatility, which describes how often and how big a slot pays, is rated medium to high. NetEnt lists the top win at 2,200 times the bet, while some review sites quote higher figures.

Gonzo's Quest Bonus Features

Avalanche multipliers

Every win triggers an avalanche, and every avalanche in a row moves the multiplier up a step. In the main game the multiplier tops out at 5x. One bet can pay several times before the sequence ends.

Free Falls

Three gold Free Fall symbols in a row on a payline award 10 Free Falls, the game’s name for free spins. The avalanche multipliers are larger during the round and can reach 15x. Landing the trigger again adds more Free Falls.

Wild

The gold question mark block is the wild. It can stand in for any other symbol to complete a payline, and it takes part in avalanches like any other block.

Gonzo’s Gold, from 2021, moves the explorer to a five-by-five grid that pays for clusters of matching symbols instead of paylines. It has an RTP of 96.11%, a top win of 3,484 times the bet, and free spins with expanding symbols. Gonzo’s Quest 2: Return to El Dorado arrived in 2025. It keeps the avalanches but uses six reels that grow from four to eight rows, for up to 262,144 ways to win, with an RTP of 96.06%.

Good to Know Before You Play

  • There is no separate bonus game or jackpot. The larger wins come from long avalanche chains, mostly during Free Falls.
  • The Free Fall symbols have to line up on a payline across the first three reels. Three scattered around the screen do not count.
  • All 20 paylines are fixed, so you only set the total bet. Listed bets run from 0.20 to 50 per spin.
  • Published top-win figures differ. NetEnt lists 2,200 times the bet, and review sites quote 2,500 to 3,750 times.

Gonzo's Quest FAQ

Can I play Gonzo's Quest for free?

Yes. The demo on this page runs on play-money credits, with no download and no sign-up. You can watch the avalanches and Free Falls for as long as you like. The credits have no cash value and cannot be cashed out.

What is the RTP of Gonzo's Quest?

Gonzo’s Quest has an RTP of 95.97%, according to NetEnt and the review sites we checked. RTP is the share of all bets the game pays back over a very long time, so it does not predict the result of a short session.

How do you trigger the bonus in Gonzo's Quest?

Line up three gold Free Fall symbols on a payline across reels one, two, and three. That awards 10 Free Falls. During the round the avalanche multiplier can climb as high as 15x, and the round can be triggered again.

What is the highest multiplier in Gonzo's Quest?

In the main game the avalanche multiplier climbs to 5x. During Free Falls the multipliers are larger and can reach 15x. The multiplier grows with each win in a chain and applies to the wins that follow in that chain.
